Isolation of Nitrogen & Compounds of Nitrogen

Isolation of Nitrogen

  1. From ammonium nitrite or ammonium dichromate.

Nitrogen is obtained by heating ammonium nitrate or ammonium dichromate.

As (NH4NO2) ammonium nitrate is unstable so it is first formed by heating ammonium salt with sodium nitrate.

    1. NH4Cl + NaNO NH4NO2 + NaCl

      NH4NO2  N2 + 2H2O

    2. (NH4)2Cr2O7  N2 + Cr2O3 + 4H2O

  2. By heating urea with nitrogen acid or alkaline hypobromide

    NH2CONH+ 2HNO CO+ 3H2O + 2N2

    NH2CONH+ 3NaOBr  CO2 + N2 + 2H2O + 3NaBr

  3. By oxidation of Ammonia

    8NH3 + 3Cl2  N+ 6NH4Cl

    8NH3 + 3Br N2 + 6NH4Br

    2NH+ 3NaOCl  N2 + 3NaCl + 3H2O

    2NH3 + 3CaOCl2  N2 + 3CaCl2 + 3H2O

    2NH+ 3CuO  N2 + 3Cu + 3H2O

  4. In small amount it is prepared by heating sodium or barium azide.

    2NaN3  2Na + 3N2

    Ba(N3)2 Ba + 3N2

Compounds of Nitrogen
